Extreme Ownership - HARDCORE Leadership Lessons from the Navy SEALs - Jocko Willink and Leif Babin

Are you ready to take your life to the next level? This is a book that will help you get there.

You may not like hearing this, but it's true: your future and long-term success depend on your ability to take ownership.

There are three types of people:

  • Those who blame others for their mistakes.

  • Those who cover up their mistakes.

  • Those who own their mistakes and learn from them.

Every major advancement in human history has come from the efforts of this third type of person. The problem is, no matter which type you are, it can be difficult to become someone who owns their mistakes and learns from them.

Who is This Book For?

  • For the Mover and Shaker: If you are someone who is committed to action, achievement, and maximizing opportunity, this book will show you how to expand your horizons and achieve even more than you thought possible.

  • For the Stagnant: If you find yourself stuck, contemplating, or rarely initiating growth, this book will help you transform from simply "plodding along" to becoming a growth maximizer. By shifting your mindset, you can begin to grow and move forward rapidly.

  • For the Spectator: If you operate timidly, reactively, or feel like a spectator in the game of life, this book can transform your thinking, actions, and tactical abilities. This book can help you go from mediocrity to greatness.

This book answers the question: "What is leadership?" The answer to that question is always different, depending on who you ask. But there doesn't need to be 100 different answers! This book gives you a simple, definitive answer.

What is Extreme Ownership?

Extreme Ownership is not just about admitting when you've made a mistake. It's about taking complete responsibility for everything that happens in your sphere of influence. It's about becoming a proactive leader in every area of your life. This book will teach you the principles used by Navy SEALs to operate effectively in high-stakes situations. And it shows you how you can use those same principles in your own life to achieve your goals.

Key Concepts in This Book:

  • Taking Responsibility: Learn to stop blaming others and start taking ownership of your actions and their consequences.

  • Leading Up and Down the Chain: No matter what your place on a team or in an organization, learn to lead effectively.

  • Simplifying Complex Problems: This book shows you how to approach challenging situations, and how to create simple plans of action.

  • Building Trust and Teamwork: Learn to create an environment where people work together for common objectives.

Developing a Growth Mindset: Discover how to constantly improve and develop new capabilities:

The Zen of Leadership

There is an old Zen saying that goes like this: "The purpose of a fishtrap is to catch fish, and when the fish are caught, the trap is forgotten. The purpose of a rabbit snare is to catch rabbits. When the rabbits are caught, the snare is forgotten. The purpose of words is to convey ideas. When the ideas are grasped, the words are forgotten".

The point is: Don't get caught up in the tools you use, but focus on the ideas and results. This book will teach you to focus on what truly matters: growth, leadership, and responsibility.

Are you ready to transform your life? Don't remain a spectator! Seize this opportunity to become a leader, a doer, and an owner.

Phobos Eclipses the Sun!

Rare Footage: Phobos Eclipses the Sun - Witness the Incredible Event!

See how Mars' two moons Phobos and Deimos orbit Mars:

A transit of Phobos across the Sun as seen from Mars takes place when Phobos passes directly between the Sun and a point on the surface of Mars, obscuring a large part of the Sun's disc for an observer on Mars. During a transit, Phobos can be seen from Mars as a large black disc rapidly moving across the face of the Sun. At the same time, the shadow (antumbra) of Phobos moves across the Martian surface.

The event could also be regarded as a particularly quick and shallow annular solar eclipse by Phobos.

A transit of Phobos from Mars usually lasts only thirty seconds or so, due to the moon's very rapid orbital period of about 7.6 hours.

Because Phobos orbits close to Mars and in line with its equator, transits of Phobos occur somewhere on Mars on most days of the Martian year. Its orbital inclination is 1.08°, so the latitude of its shadow projected onto the Martian surface shows a seasonal variation, moving from 70.4°S to 70.4°N and back again over the course of a Martian year. Phobos is so close to Mars that it is not visible south of 70.4°S or north of 70.4°N; for some days in the year, its shadow misses the surface entirely and falls north or south of Mars.

At any given geographical location on the surface of Mars, there are two intervals in a Martian year when the shadow of Phobos or Deimos is passing through its latitude. During each such interval, about half a dozen transits of Phobos can be seen by observers at that geographical location (compared to zero or one transits of Deimos). Transits of Phobos happen during Martian autumn and winter in the respective hemisphere; close to the equator they happen around the March and September equinoxes, while farther from the equator they happen closer to the winter solstice.

Observers at high latitudes (but less than 70.4°) will see a noticeably smaller angular diameter for Phobos because they are considerably farther away from it than observers at Mars's equator. As a result, transits of Phobos for such observers will cover less of the Sun's disk. Because it orbits so close to Mars, Phobos cannot be seen north of 70.4°N or south of 70.4°S; observers at such latitudes will obviously not see transits, either.

How Does an AK-47 Assault Rifle Work? See Inside the most famous assault rifle as it fires! {VIDEO}

How an AK-47 Works

  1. When the trigger is pulled,  the hammer releases and strikes the firing pin.
  2. The Firing pin strikes the primer which contains a compound that explodes to ignite gun powder inside the case.
  3. Expanding gases force the gas piston backward to cycle the bolt
  4. The 'bolt carrier' is forced back, ejecting the casing
  5. The Bolt pulls a new round from the magazine and inserts it into barrel.
  6. The Bolt carrier also resets the hammer to the starting position.
  7. The sear keeps the hammer in place until the bolt carrier returns to the forward position and locks the bolt.
  8. To fire in automatic, the 'selector' is moved to the middle position.
  9. This holds the 'disconnector' back, keeping it from catching the hammer while the trigger is pressed.

Navy SEALs Prep.School at the Great Lakes.

NAVY SEAL BUD/S TRAINING: Preparing for NSW Prep.

Navy SEALs PREP-SCHOOL : Part 2

NAVY SEAL BUD/S TRAINING: Preparing for NSW Prep. Part 2

NAVY SEAL BUD/S TRAINING: Basic Orientation

BUD/S Orientation is a three-week course that introduces students to Coronado, the Naval Special Warfare Center and the BUD/S lifestyle. During Orientation, Navy SEAL instructors introduce students to BUD/S physical training, the obstacle course, and other training aspects. This part of training is designed to prepare students for Day One of First Phase.

NAVY SEAL BUD/S TRAINING: 1st Phase

First Phase, the basic conditioning phase, is seven weeks long and develops the class in physical training, water competency and mental tenacity while continuing to build teamwork. Each week, the class is expected to do more running, swimming and calisthenics than the week before, and each man's performance is measured by a four-mile timed run, a timed obstacle course, and a two-mile timed swim. In addition to physical training, the class also learns how to conduct hydrographic survey operations.

During First Phase, the class completes Hell Week. In this grueling five-and-a-half day stretch, each candidate sleeps only about four total hours but runs more than 200 miles and does physical training for more than 20 hours per day. Hell Week finds those candidates who have the commitment and dedication required of a SEAL. Hell Week is the ultimate test of a man's will and the class's teamwork.

Because of its particularly challenging requirements, many students begin questioning their decision to come to BUD/S during First Phase, with a significant number deciding to Drop on Request [ DOR ]. Historically, students who have composite PST scores below 800 are three times more likely to succeed than the average student. Most importantly, students who have made a full commitment to their goal of becoming a SEAL those who decide ahead of time that quitting is not an option regardless of how challenging the training becomes dramatically increase their chances.

HELL WEEK!

NAVY SEAL BUD/S TRAINING: Hell Week

Hell Week finds those candidates who have the commitment and dedication required of a SEAL. Hell Week is the ultimate test of a man's will and the class's teamwork.

NAVY SEAL BUD/S TRAINING: 2nd Phase

Second Phase, the combat diving phase, lasts seven weeks.  This phase introduces underwater skills that will separate the class from other special operations forces when they become SEALs.  During this phase, the students will become basic combat swimmers and will learn open and closed-circuit diving.

Successful Second Phase students demonstrate a high level of comfort in the water and the ability to perform in stressful and often uncomfortable environments.  Students who are not completely comfortable in the water often struggle to succeed.

NAVY SEAL BUD/S TRAINING: 3rd Phase

Third phase teaches basic weapons, demolitions, land navigation, patrolling, rappelling, marksmanship and small-unit tactics.

How to Get to Mars: Timing is CRUCIAL!

This artist's animation shows the route NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander took to get from Earth to Mars. The spacecraft's path is shown in yellow, and the orbits of Mars and Earth are shown in red and blue, respectively.

Phoenix was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., on Aug. 4, 2007, when Earth and Mars were 195 million kilometers (121 million miles) apart. It will have traveled a total of 679 million kilometers (422 million miles) when it is scheduled to reach Mars on May 25, 2008. At that time, Earth and Mars will be farther apart, at 276 million kilometers (171 million miles).

The Phoenix Mission is led by the University of Arizona, Tucson, on behalf of NASA. Project management of the mission is by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. Spacecraft development is by Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver
